Rangers and Celtic joined in fierce hunt for top flight maestro by fallen English side – reports

Fallen English giants Sunderland are interested in signing Hibernian’s in-demand midfielder John McGinn, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun claims that new Sunderland manager Jack Ross wants to make the 23-year-old one of his first signings after recently taking over at the club who suffered their second successive relegation, and will be playing in league one next season.

Hibernian are reportedly wanting £3million for the Scotland international, who was linked with Celtic in January by the Daily Mail, and more recently, by the Daily Record, was linked with a move to Steven Gerrard’s upcoming Rangers revolution.

McGinn’s contract runs out at the end of next season, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation that he will be the subject of big money bids this summer.

Football Insider verdict

Would a player like McGinn be interested in a move to a club like Sunderland? It is hard to say. There is no doubt that they are a big club, but the standard of football in League Two is probably far worse than the much-maligned Scottish Premiership. McGinn could of course still earn big money playing at the Stadium of Light, and it will be intriguing to see if Sunderland offer the £3million that Hibernian are wanting. As for the interest from Celtic and Rangers, at the moment it has all gone quiet on that front. Despite all the paper talk neither side has so far made a bid for the highly-rated midfielder. Rangers’ need for a midfielder is probably greater of the two clubs at the moment, but if there was a bidding war for the player it is one that the Hoops would be likely to win. With the transfer window set to open officially this week, no doubt there will be more developments on McGinn’s future.
