‘I did very well’ – Leeds 27-year-old fights back after Christiansen loses faith

Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald has defended himself for his performances this season, after facing recent criticism.

The 27-year-old has come under fire from both Leeds fans and the media for his displays this campaign after he joined the club from Werder Bremen in the summer.

The German kept six clean sheets in his first seven Championship matches, but was then dropped from the side by head coach Thomas Christiansen in October after a series of indecisive displays.

After missing seven matches, he reclaimed his place in the side from former Wolves goalkeeper Andy Longergan but his recent form has continued to divide opinion.

He made two important saves to help the Whites to a 1-0 victory over Norwich on Saturday, just seven days after a horrendous error that lead to a goal in the 3-1 win at Queens Park Rangers.

His performances have sparked a debate over whether Christiansen should attempt to sign a new goalkeeper when the transfer window opens in January.

However, Wiedwald is content with his recent from and insists that the criticism he is facing is part of being a goalkeeper.

“I don’t really read the newspapers. Last week I made a big mistake but in the last game I did very well with the saves,” he told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“This is the job of a goalkeeper. It’s always up and down.

“If I was a striker and three times I miss the target and then I hit the target one time, I’m the hero. If a goalkeeper makes a mistake it’s always a goal.”

Leeds face Hull City in Championship action at Elland Road on Saturday, knowing that a win would see them spend Christmas day in the top-six.
