Ferdinand ‘sceptical’ of Postecoglou behaviour in fan clash at Tottenham defeat

Ange Postecoglou left Les Ferdinand feeling “sceptical” of his choices after his interaction with Tottenham fans in the wake of their 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

Spurs slipped to a disappointing loss to the Cherries on Thursday night (5 December), meaning they are now winless in three games since their 4-0 thrashing of Man City at The Etihad.

That has seen them drop to tenth in the Premier League table and potentially at risk of the sack before Postecoglou was spotted gesturing to some fans at The Vitality Stadium after the final whistle.

In his post-match interview the Tottenham boss was asked if he was having a word with those fans, and told Amazon Prime: “No I wasn’t having a word. They’re pretty disappointed and rightly so, I got some pretty direct feedback as to how we’re going.”

Ferdinand however, was not convinced the Australian made the right decision in going over and interacting with those fans.

Speaking about the incident on Amazon Prime (10:34pm), the former Tottenham striker said: “I’m always sceptical about the managers going onto the pitch and walking round.

“When you win it’s great and I know you want to appreciate the supporters, but when you lose games it’s difficult. You’re always going to get what he had there.

“Sometimes when a run of results go the wrong way, a manager heads straight down the tunnel, I think that’s what you’ve got to do at the end of the game.”

Ange Postecoglou must find a balance with the Tottenham fans

Football Insider Opinion

You can understand the point that Ferdinand is making about Postecoglou getting involved with supporters after the game to some extent.

Interacting with them at this point in such a way is a risk, given it does provide them with more ammunition to throw back at him if Spurs continue to struggle.

However, not acknowledging the Tottenham fans at all after a game such as this, instead heading straight down the tunnel, might also be a mistake.

Tottenham
Daniel Levy might have a decision to make at Tottenham.

It was a tough night for many associated with the club against Bournemouth, and supporters will have spent a lot of time and money making the journey to watch that underwhelming performance.

Heading straight down the tunnel rather than at least thanking those fans for their efforts in doing so, would therefore surely not go down well at Tottenham either.

With that in mind, Postecoglou surely has to find a way to get to the right mix of respecting supporters, without getting too involved with them.
