Finance guru: Newcastle United ‘looking closely’ at Uefa-FFP development as three-year plan mooted

Newcastle United will be planning for Uefa’s new Financial Fair Play regulations, according to Doctor Dan Plumley.

The football finance expert, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes the Magpies “will be looking closely” at the new stipulations with the aim of being in Europe in the next three years.

Uefa previously allowed clubs competing in European competitions to lose £25million over a rolling three-year assessment period.

However, Uefa announced earlier this year (7 April) that a new revenue-based system would be phased in from this month.

The new model will limit clubs to spending only 70 per cent of their turnover on wages, transfers and agent fees.

When asked by Football Insider if Newcastle will be future planning with this change in mind, Plumley said: “I think they will be looking at it closely.

“At the time of the takeover, I thought Europe in three to five years was the plan. I think that is as good yardstick as any.

“They had some room to manoeuvre under the old FFP regulations because of the way Mike Ashley ran the club. They obviously spent in January and I’d expect the same this summer.

“The modelling of the club will have been done on the best case scenario which is getting into Europe in three years. They will be mindful of the fact that they have to conform with Uefa’s version of FFP.

“I imagine it has been looked at in great detail as a strategy for the club moving forward. Europe is the aim in three years.”
