Finance guru: Tottenham set to rake it in as ‘lucrative’ summer plan announced

Tottenham are smart to capitalise on the enormous interest in Son Heung-min in South Korea with a “lucrative” pre-season tour.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs’ summer plans in East Asia.

The North London club announced last Tuesday (15 February) that they would play two exhibition matches in South Korea ahead of 2022-23.

Spurs claim they are the “most watched and best-supported overseas soccer team” in the republic.

They also have South Korea women’s national team captain Cho So-hyun on the books.

Plumley saluted Tottenham for zeroing in on a major growth market.

“A number of things are thrown into the mix here,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Overseas tours are a revenue stream that has been cut off for a couple of years because of Covid, and it was big pre-Covid.

“The big clubs are flying all over the world with these things. Asia has been one of the biggest markets.

“They can showcase their players there. With Tottenham and Son, you’re joining all those factors up.

“It can be quite lucrative despite the distance travelled. The other part of that is fan relations and reaching supporters in these territories.

“The league will be pushing it as well because of the broadcast deals that they are signing overseas.

“As much as it’s beneficial for Spurs, it’s also beneficial for the Premier League. You can see quite easily the financial logic behind this decision.

“And from Tottenham’s perspective, you have to make the most of the interest when you can.”

Tottenham have launched various South Korean social media handles and initiatives to further engage with their overseas supporters.

Son, who netted in the 3-2 win over Man City on Saturday (19 February), has 10 goals and seven assists in 29 appearances this term.
