Celtic should have tied Kristoffer Ajer down while he still had two years left on his contract - but it would be "great business if they can recoup £15million for him.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the transfer saga surrounding the 23-year-old Norwegian centre-back.

Ajer last signed a contract extension in 2018 and has just a year remaining on his current Parkhead deal.

It is frustrating to see players reach the final 12 months of their deal but it would be a top result if Celtic can get £15m for Ajer, claims Robinson.

He told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: "It's great business if they can get that sort of money for someone who's got 12 months left on his contract.

"If they've let his contract run down to the last 12 months and there's been talk of a new deal but it hasn't been signed, the writing is on the wall.

"It really frustrates me that clubs let players get down to the last 12 or 18 months and then the player can run that contract down.

"If he's a player you want to keep, tie him down 24 months before his contract runs out. Don't let it get to 12 months and we're having this debate."

Ajer featured 46 times for Celtic in all competitions last season.

He signed for the club from IK Start as a 17-year-old in 2016.
