Sources: Toney now worth £30m+ after holding Rangers talks in summer
Rangers failed in their pursuit of goal machine Ivan Toney last summer and his value has now rocketed beyond the £30million mark, Football Insider has learned.
The striker has lit up the Championship since his move to Brentford and tops the division's goal and assists charts as they push for Premier League promotion.
For Rangers, the 24-year-old striker is one who got away.
As revealed by Football Insider, Rangers held preliminary talks with Toney last summer in attempts to lure him north of the border.
Celtic did the same and offered £3m to his old club Peterborough before he completed a move to Brentford worth £9m including add-ons.
That has proved to be spectacularly good business for the west London club.
A Bees source has told Football Insider they now value Toney as highly as Ollie Watkins, their former striker who joined Aston Villa last summer.
That landed the Londoners £28m rising to a potential £33m, a record signing for Villa.
Like Watkins, Toney has made a massive impact after moving up a division at the start of the season.
The Newcastle United reject who banged in 24 league goals - nine more than anyone else - among 26 in all competitions for Peterborough last season has been just as prolific in the Championship.
He has 24 league strikes from 30 matches this season - five more than his nearest rival - and tops the assists charts alongside Norwich City's Emiliano Buendia and Blackburn Rovers loanee Harvey Elliott.
Rangers did sign two strikers of their own last summer after pulling out of the Toney race when it was clear he wanted a move to the Championship.
They recruited Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten in deals that were completed last August.
