5. Martin O’Neill quits
O’Neill was arguably the best manager that Aston Villa have in this millennium.
The Irishman took them to the League Cup final in 2010 and qualified twice for the UEFA Cup with three sixth-placed finishes in a row.
Under O’Neill, Villa were the best of the rest and when he inexplicably quit on the dawn of the 2010/11 season, the club really began to unravel.
Many believe that O’Neill’s decision to leave Villa Park over lack of transfer funds was ultimately what began their slide down their table to their relegation in 2016.
