No 1 is so bad he is a Hawthorns legend: Five worst-ever Wolves managers

5. Mark McGhee

Although he won more games than he lost, McGhee stunted Wolves’ progress in the mid-1990s and ensured that they had to wait several more years before they would return to the top-flight.

In his first season he drastically changed tactics and saw the club finish 20th – just three points clear of relegation from Division One after at one stage looking like solid play-off contenders.

In he 1996/97 season he managed to keep Wolves in the hunt for automatic promotion, but ultimately bottled it in the last few weeks of the season with Barnsley, of all teams, going up to the Premier League instead.
