Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday are plotting January moves to sign Cardiff City winger Josh Murphy, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The three Championship big hitters are keen to take advantage of the left-sided attacker’s fringe role in Neil Harris’ side.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Derby, Forest and Wednesday are all eyeing potential loan deals for Murphy.

It comes as Derby and Forest are also locked in a battle to land newly-available free agent Ravel Morrison after his contract with Dutch club ADO Den Hagg was cancelled.

The race is hotting up for Murphy, 25, amid his lack of game time at Cardiff.

The wide man was once again a substitute in last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Norwich City and has not started a Championship match since 25 November.

He has made just five starts among 15 appearances in all competitions this season.

But two of those starts have come in the domestic cups and rivals clubs have been encouraged he can be signed this month.

Murphy, who was signed from Norwich City in 2018 for £10million, is proven in the Championship and also has played regularly at Premier League level.

In 78 matches for Cardiff, the attacker has scored 11 goals and supplied six assists.

It has not matched his output at former club Norwich City, where he scored every five matches and was once regarded as one of the top young attacking talents in England.
