‘If looks could kill’ – Robbie Fowler reveals favourite moment in Liverpool derby win v Everton
By Matt Farr
Liverpool hero Robbie Fowler has admitted the substitution of Philippe Coutinho was his favourite moment during the Merseyside derby clash with Everton on Saturday.
In his column for the Mirror, Fowler wrote that he was impressed by Coutinho’s reaction to being replaced, naming that as his favourite moment from Liverpool’s memorable 3-1 win over their local rivals.
The 24-year-old Brazilian bagged a goal and an assist for the home side before being withdrawn by Jurgen Klopp in the 74th-minute in favour of a defensive change.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was introduced in his place to help retain Liverpool’s two-goal advantage.
After putting in a man-of-the-match display, it came as little surprise to Fowler that Coutinho was left devastated at being hooked by Klopp, but he admitted he was delighted at his reaction.
He wrote in the Mirror: “You might think it’s strange to start with a negative, but one of the best moments of the derby for me was Philippe Coutinho’s reaction to being replaced.
“He was gutted. If looks could kill Jurgen Klopp would have breathed his last. He was devastated to be taken off – and I was damn happy to see it. I’ll bet his manager was too.
“Hell, I’d have chained myself to the corner flag, and his reaction was great, because it showed he knew he was the main man.”
Coutinho’s mesmerising performance comes after a quiet period that has seen the Liverpool attacker struggle to hit his best form.
The Liverpool star now has eight goals and eight assists from 28 appearances, but he had scored just one goal since his return from an ankle injury in the middle of January.
His below-par performances drew criticism from pundits, with Stan Collymore urging the club to cash-in on him this summer if offered the right price.
However, Klopp and Liverpool will be hoping that there will be much more to come from Coutinho in the final weeks of the season.
The victory strengthened Liverpool’s grip on the Premier League’s top four, where they now boast a six-point lead over fifth-placed Manchester United, and a nine-point lead over Everton.
