Frank Lampard has every right to be ‘angry’ as controversial Everton footage analysed – pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk should have been sent off against Everton on Saturday (3 September).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said the decision “could have gone either way”.

As shown on Sky Sports (3 September), the 31-year-old was shown a yellow card after a late challenge on Amadou Onana.

The Reds defender caught Onana with a late, high challenge in the second half and VAR did not instruct referee Anthony Taylor to look at a replay.

As quoted by the Daily Mail (3 September), Toffees boss Frank Lampard was surprised the VAR official didn’t intervene and said Van Dijk should have been sent off.

The Merseyside derby finished 0-0 and the Everton boss said a red card would have changed the face of the last 20 minutes.

When asked if he agreed with Lampard, Hutton told Football Insider: “It’s possibly an orange if there were an orange card.

He did get him on the ankle but he’s going for the ball, he wasn’t lunging in, he wasn’t off his feet and flying into a tackle. It’s probably just over a yellow but I wouldn’t have sent him off for it.

I can still see how Frank Lampard is angry. It’s subjective, on another day it could easily have been a red card. It’s one of those ones that could really go either way.
