Frank Lampard tipped to make tactical ‘tweak’ after Everton ’embarrassment’ – pundit
Frank Lampard must fix his “embarrassing” Everton rearguard by introducing a more rigid system out of possession, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, urged the 43-year-old to introduce “banks of four defenders and five midfielders” when the ball is turned over.
Everton’s awful away form continued as the Toffees lost 4-0 in the FA Cup at Crystal Palace on Sunday (20 March).
In the Premier League, the Merseysiders have managed just one win from 13 games away from Goodison Park.
Everton, who sit 17th, have picked up just six points from a possible 39 on the road – the worst record in the top flight.
Whelan claimed “a lack of intensity” means Frank Lampard’s defence is conceding too many goals.
“There’s no doubt that they’re shipping far too many goals, especially away from home,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“We saw it against Crystal Palace. Yes, it’s an FA Cup game – but it’s the same problems they’ve had all season.
“There’s no one reacting or taking charge in that defensive block – it’s embarrassing. No one is working hard for those second balls, and they just allowed Palace to ghost in and score.
“There’s a real lack of intensity about their defending. There’s going to have to be tweaks and changes to that system.

“Lampard is going to have to bring in a rigid system out of possession. It starts with banks of four defenders and five midfielders.
“That’s the only way to cut off the space other teams are finding against them at the moment.”
