Frenkie de Jong backed to accept Chelsea offer after Man United twist – pundit
Noel Whelan has insisted Frenkie de Jong will choose Chelsea over Man United as the race for his signature hots up.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted it is the “same old story” for the Red Devils this season despite Erik ten Hag’s appointment.
According to the Daily Mirror (14 August), Man United boss Ten Hag believes De Jong, 25, will choose to join the Old Trafford club over Chelsea.
The Red Devils have already reached a £72million agreement with Barcelona for the Dutch midfielder – with the Stamford Bridge side reportedly ready to match that bid.
Blaugrana boss Xavi has remained coy about the former Ajax star’s future – claiming he “doesn’t know what will happen with the market”.
Chelsea will play Champions League football this term following last season’s third-place finish – while Man United will play in the Europa League.
Whelan insisted the choice between the two interested parties is a “no-brainer” for De Jong.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Chelsea are in a much better place after the takeover.
“You look at Chelsea and Man United – there are a lot more plus points on the Chelsea side. There’s Champions League football, they’ve brought in better players so far this summer.
“It’s a no-brainer for De Jong. Look at the start of this season – why would you choose Man United?

“It’s a new manager, but it’s the same old story for them.
“Players like De Jong, with their stature and ability, deserve to be playing in the Champions League.”
