Frimpong, Jones react to message from Konate after Liverpool contract rejection

Jeremie Frimpong and Curtis Jones reacted to a message from Ibrahima Konate as fears mount that the defender could leave Liverpool for free next summer.

The French defender quickly established himself as one of Arne Slot‘s first-choice centre-backs alongside Virgil van Dijk last season.

After featuring 22 times in the league in the 2023/24 season, Konate made 31 appearances last term as Liverpool cruised to their second-ever Premier League title.

The Reds have been quick to strengthen this summer, adding Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen to their squad.

Milos Kerkez is also on his way back to England to sign for Liverpool, as the club looks to keep pace with Man City’s busy transfer window.

But with just one year remaining on Konate’s contract, the Reds are concerned the Frenchman may follow in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s path by joining Real Madrid.

Ibrahima Konate enjoying break after Premier League title

Having claimed the first league title of his career, Konate shared several photos on Instagram enjoying a break away from football, captioned: “South”.

The post was liked by Frimpong, whilst Jones commented “Top”, with the pair showing their support for their teammate.

Liverpool could cash in on Ibrahima Konate after contract rejected

Football Insider Verdict

The Guardian reported Konate has rejected Liverpool’s initial offer of a new deal and is stalling on signing a contract.

The Reds are fresh off losing Alexander-Arnold to Madrid, having received a small fee so the defender can play in the Club World Cup.

With Konate’s deal expiring in 2026, the fear is that the defender will follow in his former teammate’s footsteps.

Instead, it would be no surprise to see Liverpool shop around their world-class centre-back with a view to selling him this summer, rather than lose him for free next year.

Finding a replacement will be no mean feat, especially after the Premier League champions missed out on signing Dean Huijsen.

Elsewhere at Anfield, Ian Darke told Liverpool News that Kostas Tsimikas could be set to leave the Reds this summer.
