Garry Monk issues promise to Leeds fans in promotion battle

Leeds manager Garry Monk has promised fans that the club will ‘fight like hell’ to win promotion to the Premier League.

Monk’s side were dealt a minor setback in their pursuit of a play-off finish with a goalless draw with Queens Park Rangers at the weekend, but they are still in a strong position.

Leeds are currently fourth in the Championship with a six-point cushion over seventh-placed Fulham, who are enjoying a late surge into the promotion battle.

However, Monk told the Yorkshire Evening Post that his side were going to fight until the very end with nine huge games left to play this season.

He said: “We’ve got nine huge games now and what we’ll do is what I’ve always done – stick together, fight hard and keep pushing.

“Yes, there are frustrations at times because we’ve set such a high standard. We want to adhere to it every time we step onto the pitch but everyone realises how well this group is doing.

“We’re in a fantastic position with a good opportunity in front of us to have a really good season. We’re fighting like hell for it and we’ll need everyone in these last nine matches to keep pushing each other, to be as good as we can be.”

Leeds still have to go up against three sides in the top six – Brighton, Reading and Newcastle – while they also have meetings with Brentford and Preston, two sides that have proven to be tricky customers.

However, they may be more relieved at the prospect of facing struggling trio Wolves, Wigan and Burton Albion, but there will be no room for complacency from Monk’s side.

They also host manager-less Norwich at the end of April.

But having come so close to a first appearance in a Championship play-off since 2006, Leeds fans will be determined to see their side go the distance in the coming months, and will be delighted by Monk’s pledge.

In other Leeds news, Noel Whelan believes these four players must be more brave.
