Garth Crooks: Romelu Lukaku playing alongside this star is too scary for words

By Matt Farr

BBC pundit Garth Crooks believes the prospect of Romelu Lukaku playing alongside Sadio Mane at Liverpool is ‘too scary for words.’

Lukaku is expected to quit Everton this summer, after reportedly turning his back on their offer of a new deal, with several high profile sides waiting to pounce.

But Crooks insists that Liverpool should join the race to steal one of their closest rivals’ most prized assets, because he could establish a formidable partnership with Mane, who has been in impressive form this season.

Mane has been prolific from his right wing role since arriving at Liverpool in the summer, contributing 12 goals and eight assists, and Crooks believes that he could be even better alongside the Everton 23-year-old.

Lukaku, meanwhile, is currently the leading scorer in the Premier League this term, having netted 21 goals from 28 appearances, including nine goals from his last six league outings.

Crooks wrote for BBC Sport: “I can think of a number of top teams at home and abroad who would pay considerably more for Lukaku than Everton spent bringing him to the club.

“Manchester United need to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic sooner rather than later. Chelsea have doubts about retaining Diego Costa because of the interests of China.

“Arsenal will need rebuilding post-Arsene Wenger – and Lukaku joining Sadio Mane at Liverpool is just too scary for words.”

Despite Lukaku’s reported snub, Everton are still confident that they can retain his services beyond the summer.

The club’s owner, Farhad Moshiri, has attempted to reassure Everton fans that they have nothing to worry about, while manager Ronald Koeman insists they will do the maximum to keep him at the club.

However, the Mirror have claimed that an agreement has already been reached to allow Lukaku to leave Goodison Park this summer.

It is understood that Everton chiefs made a vow last summer not to stand in Lukaku’s way if they could not secure a top-four finish in the Premier League this season – they are currently seventh.
