Gary O’Neil being sacked by Wolves regardless of West Ham clash

Gary O’Neil is expected to sacked by Wolves regardless of the result against West Ham on Monday night (9 December), sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Molineux boss is in line to be dismissed if they suffer another defeat on the road against a side facing similar struggles.

Wolves fans have turned on O’Neil in the wake of their 4-0 defeat to Everton on 4 December, with the travelling supporters largely calling for his head.

The manager’s side have won just two of their opening 14 league games this season and sit second-bottom of the league, while they have shipped a league-high 36 goals in that time.

It has been widely reported that the loser of West Ham v Wolves will lose their job, with Julen Lopetegui also facing intense pressure at the London Stadium.

However, should Wolves come out on top, O’Neil is facing an uphill struggle to retain his position and would need a drastic turnaround in form to save his job.

Wolves to sack Gary O’Neil after West Ham clash

The defensive issues O’Neil’s team have faced so far this season are said to be the driving force behind the pressure on his position as he has shown a failure to adapt.

Meanwhile, Wolves have suffered issues off the pitch as well as on it, with the financial situation putting the manager in a difficult position.

Sources say that the board have even been reluctant to part ways with the boss in their current financial situation due to the compensation fee he would be due.

O’Neil’s struggles have come amid constant issues behind the scenes at Molineux, with the club forced to sell a number of key players.

Influential captain Max Kilman joined West Ham, while the likes of Pedro Neto were also let go as the club needed to raise money to avoid a breach of profit and sustainability rules.

Despite the adversity off the pitch, however, performances so far this season have not been good enough and the manager’s position now appears untenable.
