George Edmundson: Expected winner named in Middlesbrough & Portsmouth race
Middlesbrough are leading the race to sign Ipswich defender George Edmundson on loan, sources have told Football Insider.
The 27-year-old has dropped down the pecking order at the newly promoted Premier League side and has been made available on loan.
Ipswich brought in Dara O’Shea and Jacob Greaves this summer to enhance their defensive options, which have deemed Edmundson surplus to requirements.
First-team opportunities are available at all of the interested clubs, but Middlesbrough are poised to land his signature.
Edmundson has only played one minute of football so far this season, coming off the bench at the end of Ipswich’s 4-1 loss against Man City.
Middlesbrough are set to win the race for George Edmundson
Edmundson had played for Ipswich all the way through the club’s journey from League One to the Premier League, racking up 75 appearances for the club.
Middlesbrough are in the market for an experienced defender who can immediately be placed into the starting lineup.
Edmundson has played 20 times in the Championship where he scored once and provided two assists.
With 202 appearances throughout his career, the central defender brings plenty of experience with him.

Michael Carrick’s men have kept two clean sheets in their opening five matches this season but did suffer a 5-0 loss in their most recent outing against Stoke City.
Middlesbrough will be back in action on Saturday (31 August) against Cardiff City.
