Gerrard deserves all the credit as Rangers confirm capture of 'next Billy Gilmour' - pundit
Kevin Phillips insists the signing of Charlie McCann is another indicator of “exciting” progress at Rangers.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted after the Gers confirmed the signing of the 19-year-old.
On 30 July, Football Insider revealed Rangers have shelled out around £750,000 to sign McCann.
It is understood he will initially play in the Rangers ‘B’ team before graduating to their first-team set-up next year.
The midfielder signed a three-year deal at Ibrox.
Phillips claims Steven Gerrard must take the credit for this deal as the Gers could have the next Billy Gilmour on their hands.

“It’s great to see,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I think that actually comes from the manager. I’m sure that’s his move.
“Signing players like that, you can’t do it in your first season at a club, as a manager.
“You have to earn that trust from the board or the owner. He’s done that. It’s a bargain as well.
“He’s won the trophy and they will listen to him. Rangers are planning for the future.
“What can they do to aid the club’s progress? Signing top young talents is a good place to start.
“Rangers could have the next Billy Gilmour. It’s another very exciting move from the club.”
Last season’s breakthrough star Nathan Patterson is the latest example of a top talent graduating into the Rangers first team.
Patterson’s emergence will encourage other Gers youth players that they can force their way into Gerrard’s plans.
