Gerrard has new ‘Defoe’ at Aston Villa after ‘perfect’ reveal – McLeish

Alex McLeish has claimed Steven Gerrard has a new “Jermain Defoe” at Aston Villa in the shape of Ashley Young.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the new Villa boss would lean on the 36-year-old in the same way he did Defoe at Rangers.

As quoted on Tuesday (30 November), Gerrard hailed Young’s “fantastic leadership” and stated the veteran’s has been “perfect” for all the coaching staff.

Much like Defoe, Gerrard played with Young during their time together on England duty.

As such, McLeish suggested the former Manchester United man would play a big role both on and off the pitch

“McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “The Jermain Defoe comparison. That is exactly the type of brilliant character that Steve will have in the dressing room.

“Not only that, Ashley’s performance (v Palace) was really, really good. He got into the right positions, he supported the front guys. He had a couple of efforts on goal and defended well.

“Villa were a really impressive unit on the day. Palace, after having had a good wee spell, were second best. It was a great start for Steven.

“Ashley Young – I almost called him Defoe there – was great.”

Young rejoined Aston Villa on a free transfer this summer after leaving Inter Milan.

He was used sparingly by former boss Dean Smith, making three starts in six Premier League appearances.

Having come off the bench in Gerrard’s first game in charge, Young started against Crystal Palace.
