Gerrard puts former Anfield team-mate top of Rangers summer shopping list – report
Steven Gerrard could be announced as Rangers manager within the next 24 hours and after he was promised sufficient funds to put together a squad capable of challenging Celtic, he made Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel one of his top targets for the summer, according to a report.
The Daily Record claims that Gerrard, 37, has a shopping list for the upcoming transfer window and Skrtel, 33, is one of the Liverpool icon’s former Anfield team-mates that he is eyeing up a swoop for.
It is understood that Gerrard held fresh talks with Stewart Robertson and Mark Allen in London on Thursday and fresh promises about transfer funding is what has helped him to decide to join the Light Blues for next season.
The report adds that Gerrard and soon-to-be assistant manager Gary McAllister could be at Ibrox on Saturday for the game against Kilmarnock.
Football Insider verdict
Rangers will more than likely need defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window and Skrtel should be a great addition. He will instantly have a great relationship and respect for Gerrard and still has a lot of quality to add to the Gers side. Skrtel has been a mainstay for Fenerbahce this term in what is an ultra-competitive league. His side are still fighting for the Super Lig title at this late stage of the campaign and there’s every chance that the Light Blues will be going in for a very experience international on a real high if they do pull off a title win. The Slovakian defender has made 27 appearances in all competitions this term and scored three goals. He would be miles better than Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso and Russell Martin so lets hope this deal is wrapped up.
In other Rangers news, this centre-back wanted by the Gers and rivals Celtic is due to head to Glasgow with his deal expiring soon.
