Gerrard will be in Morelos’ ear after what I spotted in Rangers v Slavia Prague – Whelan

Noel Whelan has suggested Steven Gerrard is finally getting through to Alfredo Morelos about his “petulance” at Rangers.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the manager’s methods were working after the 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague.

The Czech side managed to keep Morelos at bay on Thursday, although his header did lead to Filip Helander netting the Light Blues’ equaliser.

The Colombian hitman had scored four goals in as many games prior to Thursday’s clash in Prague.

Despite drawing a blank, the 24-year-old managed to keep a lid on his frustrations and lead the line effectively.

Whelan suggested Morelos’ new-found attitude is all down to Gerrard.

Asked if he thought Morelos had found a way to manage his temper, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “Yeah, absolutely. I mean, look, it’s still there but he managed it last night (v Slavia Prague).

“I think it’s one of these things you need to keep telling a player and keep it on his mind.

“‘You can’t be having that, we need you, you’re so important to the team, you’re so important to our success.’ You’ve got to keep telling him that all the time so he knows. He’ll have it in the back of his mind that he can control himself in certain situations.

“He’s got a reputation of that kind of player. There’s going to be players in the opposition that are going to try to rile him and bring it out. You’ve got to be better than that.

“Steven Gerrard will be reiterating that to him all the time. How important it is they have him on the field – no petulance, don’t react.

“All these little things come from a manager telling the player. It’s about keeping him fully focused on what is needed from him.”
