Getting enigmatic midfielder off Rangers wage bill must be high priority for Mark Allen

COMMENT
Rangers midfielder Carlos Pena is reported to be on the brink of a return to Mexico on loan with former Gers boss Pedro Caixinha at Cruz Azul, according to the Daily Mail, and getting the 27-year-old off the wage bill at Ibrox should help director of football Mark Allen strengthen his squad in January.
The Mexican is widely reported to be one of the highest earners at Ibrox and any loan will see Cruz Azul pick up the lion’s share of Pena’s wages between now and the end of the season.
With Rangers lacking a genuine creative outlet going forward, freeing up the bulk of Pena’s wages should allow Murty to bring some new faces in ahead of the second-half of the Scottish Premiership campaign as they look to close the gap on leaders Celtic.
Midfielder Pena has been something of an enigma during his time in Scotland with five goals in 14 games giving the appearance of a healthy return on the £2.2million the Gers spent to secure his signature from Chivas Guadalajara in June.
Watching Pena though, is a different story completely.
The 27-year-old often looks cumbersome, out of shape and clumsy.
From falling over the ball when trying to make a pass to fresh air swipes when lining up to shoot, Pena have never looked comfortable in Scotland and a move back to Mexico is probably the best thing for all involved at this point.
If the Gers can move Pena on and re-invest the money in someone who can at least give some sort of consistency, it’s a step in the right direction for the Gers after several botched transfer windows.
