Glasgow expert suggests real reason Rangers have axed Allan McGregor

Frank McAvennie has suggested Allan McGregor doesn’t want to play twice a week for Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker suggested Michael Beale has been alternating between his goalkeepers to give McGregor a rest.

The 40-year-old returned between the sticks for the 1-0 Scottish Cup victory over St Johnstone on Saturday (21 January).

But for the midweek fixture against Kilmarnock on Wednesday (18 January), it was Jon McLaughlin who was given the nod with McGregor in goal the previous weekend in the Viaplay Cup semi-final against Aberdeen (15 January).

As quoted by STV (19 January), Beale explained that McGregor had been rested for the league game against Kilmarnock given that he played 120 minutes at Hampden the weekend before.

The Gers boss insisted that his side need to bring in a new goalkeeper or make a decision as to whether McLaughlin, or third choice Robby McCrorie, will be number one.

McAvennie insisted McGregor is still first choice for the Light Blues for now,

McGregor is an at an age now where he might not want to play two games a week,” he told Football Insider.

He is definitely number one. He is better than McLaughlin in my opinion. He might just not be able to play.

Rangers

McLaughlin is a very capable goalkeeper but he is not Allan McGregor. Some of the saves McGregor pulls of, McLaughlin could not do that.

It is a win-win for Rangers and the keepers. McGregor will be happy he is only playing one game but he is definitely the number one goalkeeper there.
