Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio comments see Glenn Whelan hit out at Aston Villa fan
Glenn Whelan lashed out at an Aston Villa fan on social media after comments about Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio around the 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
The Villains have only been a Premier League side since 2018/19, but have already re-established themselves in the big time.
Having qualified for Champions League football last season, Aston Villa signed Marcus Rashford on loan from Man United in January.
The move shows the allure of playing for the Midlands side, and after struggling at the start of the season, the Villains are now playing their way back into contention to qualify for European football again this season.
Marco Asensio joined Aston Villa on loan from PSG in January, in a similar move to Rashford‘s as the three-time Champions League winner looks to get his career back on track.
The moves to sign the two stars has caused excitement for fans of the club, with one pointing out on X, somewhat disrespectfully, that they used to watch Whelan play for the side, and now had the opportunity to watch some of world football’s biggest names turn out for the Midlands club.

Glenn Whelan hilariously claps back against Aston Villa fan on X
Following the post, Whelan responded to the fan by saying “Don’t forget Glenn Whelan helped pull your club from one its darkest days… enjoy Asensio Rogers and Rashford and thank me later.”
Whelan was a part of the team that lost to Fulham in the 2017/18 play-off final, before returning a season later to beat Frank Lampard’s Derby 2-1 to gain promotion.
Despite not featuring in either final, the Irish international played 68 times across two seasons for the Villains, helping them return to the Premier League before leaving for Hearts in Scotland.

Aston Villa unfortunate to draw against Liverpool
Rashford was impressive against Ipswich in a cameo off the bench, and forced his way into the starting line-up for the match against Liverpool (19 February).
Despite failing to score, the England international caused Real Madrid transfer target Trent Alexander-Arnold problems, before being replaced by Jacob Ramsey in the 67th minute.
Premier League standing | Games played | Goal difference | Points |
5. Bournemouth | 25 | +15 | 43 |
6. Chelsea | 25 | +13 | 43 |
7. Newcastle | 25 | +9 | 41 |
8. Fulham | 25 | +5 | 39 |
9. Aston Villa | 26 | -3 | 39 |
The result was a disappointing one for the Villains, who fought from behind to take a 2-1 lead, before being forced to settle for a 2-2 draw.
Villa remain in ninth place, level on points with the team who beat them in the 2018 Championship play-off final, Fulham.
