Goldson may have pre-contract agreement ‘lined up’ after ‘massive’ Rangers reveal – pundit

Danny Mills has suggested Rangers vice-captain Connor Goldson may be set to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England defender claimed it would be a “gamble” for Goldson to let his contract expire at the end of the season.

The Athletic‘s Jordan Campbell reported last Thursday (23 December) it is unlikely the 29-year-old will leave the club in January.

He is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January.

“It’s a risk for Goldson,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“This is not Cristiano Ronaldo running his contract down, this is not Harry Kane running his contract down.

“Form and injuries can play a huge part in what happens next. That always has to be a concern.

“Some players will go ‘Right, all out. I need to be at my very best all day, no matter what. Flat out showing everybody how good I am to show everyone I deserve a move’.

“Other players might think ‘There’s a potential move here, the last thing I need is an injury. I might not make that tackle and push myself’. Sometimes that can have a massive detrimental effect.

“It’s a gamble. It’s not one where if he gets an injury he will definitely get a move. Certain players, you think it doesn’t matter if he gets an injury, his quality and reputation mean they would still take him.

“Maybe a pre-contract move is what he has lined up. Then it’s a different kettle of fish.

“But this isn’t a superstar where no matter what happens between now and the end of the season he is guaranteed a move.”
