Murty: This is what people outside of Rangers and Celtic won’t understand about Old Firm

Rangers manager Graeme Murty has admitted he didn’t get to grips with unique atmosphere of the Old Firm until he managed in a game against Celtic last season.

Murty was in his first spell as interim manager at Ibrox when a late Clint Hill equaliser earned the Gers a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park in March.

And as quoted by Sky Sports, the now permanent manager believes that only people who have been involved in an Old Firm game can understand the experience.

“The colour, the pageantry, the noise, these are all things that people outside of the came can’t understand, won’t understand…and I didn’t until last year,” he said.

The first derby between the sides this season was comfortably won 2-0 by Celtic at Ibrox in September thanks to goals from Tom Rogic and Leigh Griffiths.

Rangers’ last league victory at Celtic Park came in 2010, when Walter Smith’s side came from a goal down at half-time to win 3-1.

Graeme Murty leads his team into the game a huge 11 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.

The Gers currently remain three points behind Aberdeen in the battle for second place, after defeating Motherwell 2-0 at Ibrox on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Danny Wilson and Alfredo Morelos.

Murty, who is in charge at Ibrox until the end of the season, has saw his team perform very inconsistently since he took over from the sacked Pedro Caixinha in October, with wins against Aberdeen (twice), Hearts and Hibs but defeats to Dundee, Hamilton, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock.
