Graham Potter handed ‘big’ boost as Chelsea race for ‘world-class’ new addition – pundit
A world-class sporting director would be a “big help” to Graham Potter at Chelsea, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker also claimed Potter’s working relationship with Todd Boehly will be “huge”.
Chelsea confirmed last week (8 September) that the 47-year-old had left Brighton & Hove Albion to take over from Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.
The Telegraph reported the same day that Potter will have a say in recruiting a “world class” sporting director as Boehly looks to replace Marina Granovskaia.
“Continuity all over the club is what you need,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ewan Kingsbury.
“I think that would be a big help to Potter coming into the club.
“Look, the transfer window is closed and that’s the one good thing about it. Right now, you’ve just got to deal with the players that you’ve got on board.
“Find a way of playing, whether that’s the same style that he played at Brighton.
“He’s got a bigger job, that’s for sure. He’ll be under the spotlight every single week.
“I think you get away with it at Brighton and you are not going to get away with it at Chelsea because they will be expecting results and will be expecting them very, very quickly.
“I do believe that he will have a better working relationship with the owners than Tuchel did and that’s huge.”

Chelsea spent over just over £270million in the summer transfer window smashing the record for a club in a single window.
They added Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Marc Cucrella and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before sacking Tuchel less than a week after the window slammed shut.
In other news, a medical insider has revealed Aubameyang will not recover for “six weeks” after the latest from Chelsea.
