Graham Roberts: This is why Tottenham hung on to beat Southampton

By Danny Wright

Graham Roberts has praised Mauricio Pochettino for his use of substitutions in Tottenham’s narrow win over Southampton.

Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli scored first-half goals to give Spurs a two-goal lead but James Ward-Prowse pegged them back in the second half to ensure a nervy end to the game.

Pochettino decided to welcome Harry Winks to the field in the place of Son Heung-min in the 75th minute, a change that Spurs legend Roberts believes was vital in safeguarding all three points.

Winks has impressed the White Hart Lane faithful since breaking into the first team and played a big part in helping Tottenham earn all three points against the Saints.

Roberts said on his personal Twitter account that Pochettino was very clever in keeping Mousa Dembele on the pitch and bringing on Winks to pack out the midfield. He also believes that bringing on Janssen towards the end happened at the right time.

The 57-year-old made over 200 appearances for Tottenham during his six year stay at the club in the 1980s.

During his time in north London he won two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup before he went on to play for the likes of Rangers, Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion.

Spurs moved two points clear of Manchester City in second place of the Premier League after Pep Guardiola and his side failed to beat Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

After the upcoming international break, Spurs back-to-back away trips to Burnley and Swansea as they look to continue their impressive league form.
