Kevin Phillips has backed Ben Chilwell to enjoy great success at Chelsea after the Blues confirmed the blockbuster capture of the Leicester City defender.
The former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that Frank Lampard will be “delighted” to have signed the 23-year-old on a long-term deal.
The club confirmed the signing yesterday after Football Insider revealed on 5 August that the two clubs had settled on a fee in the region of £50million.
The left-back put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge and became the club’s third summer signing.
Phillips, who worked with Chilwell while a coach at Leicester City, gave a glowing character reference for the full-back.
“I think it is a good price for a young, talented England full-back,” he told Football Insider.
“He has got years and years ahead of him. I think it is smart business from Chelsea. Frank Lampard will have been delighted to have got him through the door.
“Knowing the kid, having worked with him, he has a fantastic attitude both on and off the pitch.
“It is a great signing and I am really looking forward to him settle in at Chelsea and play well.”
The Blues announced another defensive signing today after France Under-21 centre-half Malang Sarr put pen to paper on a five-year deal following his exit from Nice.
Chilwell and Sarr will form part of a new look defence under at the Bridge next season with Thiago Silva soon to join them after he passed his medical today.
