Griffiths tipped to reject Celtic deal this week after what Kennedy did v Rangers – pundit
Frank McAvennie has tipped contract rebel Leigh Griffiths to walk away from Celtic despite John Kennedy confirming talks ver his future.
The former Hoops striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is baffled by John Kennedy’s decision to not start Griffiths in recent games.
Last week, Kennedy provided an update on Griffiths’ future ahead of the trip to Ibrox.
He said, “Leigh will have the discussion with the guys at the club, probably in the next week or so – two weeks, maybe – and decide what’s going to happen.”
As reported by the Scottish Sun, Celtic had until the end of April to trigger a one-year extension clause in Griffiths’ contract.
McAvennie insists it is the right move to offer Griffiths a deal but questioned why he would commit to a club when he isn’t playing.
“I think it’s the right move, for me. But why aren’t they playing him?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“They needed goals against Rangers and they brought on Micky Johnston, I really don’t get it.
“What is the point in giving him a contract if he’s not going to play? He should have started against Rangers.
“He scored against Aberdeen and then he was left out by Kennedy again.
“Why would he sign? I wouldn’t be surprised if he walked away after not being picked again.”
Griffiths, 30, has only started seven Scottish Premiership games this season but has still managed to grab five goals.
He played no part as Celtic lost the last Old Firm of the season 4-1 at the weekend.
