Gustavo Hamer ready to move abroad as reality of Leeds pursuit emerges

Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer is likely to move abroad rather than join Leeds United this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Whites have been long-term admirers of the Dutchman, and while that remains the case, it is understood that the “ship has sailed” for them to now make a concrete move for him.

Daniel Farke feels that his team are well-stocked in attacking midfield, and with Hamer turning 29 before the start of next season, his age has also put serious “question marks” over him.

Sheffield United are set to sell the ex-Coventry man for the “best price” that they can get this summer, and a move across the continent is most likely amid strong interest from clubs in Turkey and the Netherlands.

Leeds want to strengthen again this summer if they secure their Premier League status, and they now have their eyes fixed on bigger targets than Hamer.

Coventry City backed to make return move for Gustavo Hamer

Leeds have been heavily linked with Hamer in almost every transfer window in recent years, but they are now set to pass up the chance to sign him this summer.

The creative midfielder has been consistently touted for a return to the Netherlands, and that appears to be a distinct possibility this time around, as Sheffield United look to raise funds for their own new additions.

However, Coventry City have also been backed to have a big say in where the veteran’s future may lie next term.

The Sky Blues secured the Championship title on Tuesday night, and their former assistant manager Mick Brown told Football Insider that Coventry could make a push for Hamer this summer.

Brown suggested that the idea of a return to the CBS Arena is something that would likely appeal to all parties this summer, now that the prospect of Premier League football is on the table.

Leeds have clear priority for their summer spend

Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Leeds are eyeing a cut-price move for Lois Openda this summer, with Juventus looking to offload the striker ahead of next season.

The Whites view the addition of a new frontman as a top priority for their summer business, and they are keen to sign the Belgian on a loan-to-buy deal, after his prolific stint with RB Leipzig in recent seasons.

Farke and Co. are adamant that further attacking additions must be sourced in order to provide adequate support for Dominic Calvert-Lewin next term, and that is set to take precedence over any moves for new midfielders, like Hamer.

The West Yorkshire outfit are not expected to have mountains of cash available to add to their squad in the coming months, meaning there is a clear need for them to prioritise at Elland Road.
