Hackett Exclusive: Official slammed for Daniel Farke ban as Leeds stun Sunderland

Leeds manager Daniel Farke’s touchline ban after receiving a booking in such a dramatic game has seen the fourth official criticised by Keith Hackett.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that it was a “pity” the fourth official called referee Stuart Attwell into the technical area to book Farke after a last-gasp winner for Leeds.

Pascal Struijk came off the bench to score twice, as Leeds came from behind to win 2-1 against their promotion rivals Sunderland.

Joe Rothwell, who was brought on alongside the Dutch defender, assisted both goals with wonderful crosses into the box.

However, the German manager will now be forced to watch from the stands after he received his third yellow card of the season.

Leeds fans had previously called for Farke to be sacked after a loss to Millwall, but his side have rebounded and now top the Championship table.

Leeds make it 15 games unbeaten in Championship

The Lilywhites are now 15 games unbeaten in the Championship, as they look set for a return to the Premier League, following their relegation in 2023.

Dan James has been one of Leeds’ best players this season, and whilst lively, the winger struggled to make an impact against a resolute Sunderland side.

Dennis Cirkin made a hash of defending James for Sunderland, but the left-back got off lightly, thanks to the Welsh winger being unable to find the back of the net with his chances.

Keith Hackett regrets Daniel Farke’s ban for Leeds United.

The same can be said for Manor Solomon, who Leeds fans want to see signed on a permanent deal, following his performances, but he too could not get anything going.

Instead, Farke made the inspired decision to bring on Struijk, who’s physical presence gave the Yorkshire side an aerial outlet to aim at in the box.

The win takes Leeds above Sheffield United to first in the Championship table, two points ahead of the Blades.

Ex-PGMOL chief gives verdict on refereeing performance in Leeds vs Sunderland

Speaking to Football Insider about a penalty claim from Leeds, and the decision to book Farke as the manager celebrated his side’s late winner, the former referee praised Attwell and said:

“One controversial decision in the game that should have seen Leeds United awarded a penalty kick. Given that I thought Stuart Attwell delivered a good performance.

“Pity that the fourth official in such a highly charged game decided to bring Attwell to the technical area that resulted in a sanction for the Leeds manager.”

Attwell had been a late replacement as a referee in the match between Leeds and Sunderland, after it was revealed online that Craig Pawson may be a Sheffield United fan, causing a conflict of interest.
