‘Half the Crystal Palace players don’t take any notice of Hodgson’ – Pundit reacts to Graham Potter update

Graham Potter would be a “superb” replacement for Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed he has “no doubt” that the former Chelsea boss would be able to replicate his success at Brighton at Selhurst Park.

Potter was recently spotted at Palace’s 5-0 thrashing against Arsenal, but as revealed by Football Insider (22 January), his attendance was not an indication he is set to take over the Eagles.

Current boss Hodgson has been under immense pressure at the club having won just twice in his last 12 games in all competitions.

As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month (1 January), Hodgson will “100% leave” the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

McAvennie urged Hodgson to retire after nearly 47 years in management and claimed Potter would be able to garner respect from the Palace squad that the 76-year-old can’t.

“I think Palace have really good players,” he told Football Insider. “No disrespect to Roy Hodgson, he’s been one of the best managers for as far back as I can remember.

“But he’s so outdated now – just go and watch your grandkids play football, Roy!

“These modern managers are going to shout at you, but Roy isn’t. Are these players taking any notice of him? I don’t think so.

“Half the team don’t even know who Hodgson is and what he’s done!

“Anything before the Premier League era, they’re a bit ignorant to it.

“He did well for Palace by keeping them up last year, but he was the cheap option for them.

“If Potter was to go in, he would have the respect of the players and he could work them into shape.

“He would do well there. What he did at Brighton was superb.

“He’d do that again at Palace, I have no doubt.

“Chelsea was just a step too big for him.”
