Harry Kane could be plotting to quit Tottenham amid new contract claim – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Harry Kane could stall contract talks with Tottenham until next summer (2023) and open the door to a potential exit.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 29-year-old could “control” his future and put pressure on Spurs by running his deal down another year.

Kane currently has two years left to run on his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having signed a four-year deal in 2018 – with no sign of an imminent renewal.

According to German outlet Kicker (10 July), Bayern Munich are eyeing a possible swoop for the England captain in 2023 and see him as Robert Lewandowski’s successor.

Kane went public with his desire to move to Man City last summer (2021) but a mega-money move failed to materialise.

Whelan suggested the striker could emulate Raheem Sterling’s imminent move to Chelsea.

“He may well want to see his contract out,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He could run it down to the final year and that would really put the pressure on Tottenham to do something.

“He’s got to make sure he has a good season this year – and I have absolutely no doubt that he will. He’ll be playing Champions League football again, so that’s exciting.

“But when you get down to the last year of a contract, like Raheem Sterling, the pressure is on the club.

“He’s not had that control for a while but come next season – he will be in control.

“The money will then come his way. Either on a free transfer elsewhere, or from a bigger wage at Tottenham.

“If I’m Harry Kane, I’m seeing the contract out until next summer and putting the pressure on Tottenham to progress to where I want to be.”
