Harry Maguire faces extended spell on Man United sidelines after confirmed news – pundit
Frank McAvennie has claimed Harry Maguire will be on the bench for Man United “indefinitely”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Erik ten Hag made the “right decision” benching Maguire for the game against Southampton on Saturday (27 August).
The 29-year-old has only made two appearances for Ten Hag’s side in the Premier League this season.
He was an unused substitute for the Red Devil’s 1-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.
The England international was also left on the bench for United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool last Monday (22 August).
As quoted by the Daily Mail (27 August), the Manchester boss said that being captain does not guarantee a start.
When asked how long Maguire could be set to face out of the starting lineup, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Indefinitely I think.
“I don’t think this manager has any problems leaving him on the bench. If you’re not doing it, you’re out. I’m all for it, I’ve not got any qualms about that.
“And he’s been proven right. Although they didn’t play well at the weekend, they were calmer.

“It embarrasses me that the players can’t do what they did against Liverpool against lower teams. The one thing that he did do right was leave Maguire out.
“When you keep a clean sheet that’s a good reflection on the goalkeeper and the defence so he’s clearly made the right choice.“
