Harry Maguire told to quit Man United this summer after £20m bombshell – pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Harry Maguire should quit Man United as he “doesn’t fit” into Erik ten Hag’s plans.

The former Tottenham and Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed his removal as captain suggests the Red Devils wish to move in a “different direction”.

As quoted by club media (16 July), Maguire confirmed he will be replaced as captain of Man United following “discussions” with manager Erik ten Hag.

The England international has been widely linked with a move away to Old Trafford, with clubs like West Ham and Newcastle interested in his services.

However, Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (18 July) that Maguire wants his £10million-a-year Man United contract – which has two years left to run – paid up before he considers leaving the club.

Sources say he could be willing to sit out his contract and wait for his chance under Ten Hag.

He made 31 appearances across all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign but started in just 16 of those outings.

Hutton told Football Insider: “I can only speak from my perspective, and I’d be really hurt.

“I think I’d see the writing on the wall if I was Maguire.

“When you consider how his season went last season, and the fact that Ten Hag is bringing in his own players – he doesn’t really fit into that.

“If he’s not playing regularly, the captaincy was always going to be an issue.

“Him being stripped of that is letting him know that the club wants to move in a different direction.

“Personally, I’d want to leave for a new challenge.

“Maybe it’s time for him to move on and get his career back on track. He’s an outstanding footballer, but he’s going to be hurt.”
