Harry Maguire using ‘pathetic’ abuse to tranform his Man United career – Mills

Harry Maguire will use being booed by England fans as fuel to improve his form for Man United.

That’s according to former Leeds United defender Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Maguire was subjected to “pathetic” abuse.

Maguire, 29, was jeered by some sections of Wembley as his name was read out before England’s game against Ivory Coast kicked off on Tuesday (29 March).

After the game, as quoted by BBC Sport, Gareth Southgate called the defender’s reception “a joke, an absolute joke”.

Several England stars have rushed to Maguire’s defence, including Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson.

“Being jeered by your own fans before a game is pathetic,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I don’t get it. If you want to boo at half-time or full time after a poor performance, that is your right as a supporter.

“Is booing your player support? No. I have heard some ridiculous arguments saying ‘we were booing the decision to play him because he’s out of form’.

“Nonsense. Do think Portuguese fans are booing Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes?

“You don’t have to pick players on form, that’s more nonsense. If you did that you would have a new team every time there was an international break.

“Look at Shearer at Euro 96. He hasn’t scored for England in something like two years before that.

“He came out of that tournament as top goalscorer because he was given the chance to show how good he is.

“At the back, you need reliability. You need that settled if you want to be successful.

“Maguire has to use this as fuel to say ‘I’m going to prove you all wrong’.”
