Harry Wilson can enter Fulham history after announcement, he should beat Erling Haaland and Hugo Ekitike

Harry Wilson has been nominated for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for December after an extraordinary run of form.

Leeds United came close to signing Wilson in the summer transfer window, with decision-makers at Craven Cottage counting their lucky stars that the move did not come to fruition.

The winger has been incredible this season, netting seven goals and providing four assists in what has been a shock campaign.

Fulham are attempting to sign tie Wilson down to a new contract, but the Wales international could depart when his deal expires in the summer.

Leeds have retained their interest in Wilson, but will face huge competition for the 28-year-old if he does become a free agent.

Harry Wilson among nominees for Premier League award

The Premier League announced on Thursday that Wilson is nominated among several stars for the Player of the Month award for December.

Leeds‘ Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Manchester City‘s Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden and Erling Haaland, Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, and Liverpool‘s Hugo Ekitike make up the other nominees.

Should Wilson win the award, however, he will enter a very exclusive list. Rodrigo Muniz is the only other current Fulham player to have won the Player of the Month award.

The Brazilian became only the third ever Cottager to claim the award in March 2024, after he had netted four goals and provided an assist.

The other two winners played in Fulham teams of old. Louis Saha won the award in August 2001, and it would not be won again at Craven Cottage before February 2010 saw Mark Schwarzer lift it after letting in just one goal in five matches.

The Australian remains one of only 10 goalkeepers to ever win the Premier League’s player of the month award, and the first from Oceania.

Wilson should win December Player of the Month

Wilson undoubtedly faces fierce competition for the December award. The winger netted twice, including a stunner against Crystal Palace, and provided four assists.

Other main contenders include Haaland, who scored five goals and provided three assists, Ekitike, who scored five and assisted one, and, of course, Calvert-Lewin, who scored six goals in six successive games.

But the context surrounding Wilson’s goals should not be ignored. The forward kicked off the month with an assist against Manchester City, before he scored against Palace.

Fulham lost both of those games, but were dragged back to winning ways by the 28-year-old when he picked up three direct goal contributions in a 3-2 win over Burnley.

Wilson would finish the month by assisting the winner for Raul Jimenez‘s winner against West Ham.

Fulham have climbed to ninth in the last month, with Wilson’s contributions providing much of the explanation for that. He should be named Fulham’s fourth-ever winner of the Player of the Month award.
