Harvey Elliott backed for new Liverpool role after major development – pundit
Alan Hutton has suggested Harvey Elliott could make his mark in the Liverpool side while Thiago Alcantara recovers from injury.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa striker said Elliott is ready to “step up” into the “flair player role” for the Reds.
The 19-year-old was on the bench for Liverpool’s season opener against Fulham last Saturday (6 August).
He was substituted on in place of Thiago in the second half of the 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage.
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (12 August), Jurgen Klopp said Thiago faces four to six weeks out after suffering a hamstring strain in the game on Saturday (6 August).
Klopp said he has been impressed with Elliott who is “in a good way” after a “good pre-season”.
The Reds boss added that there is still competition for places and that it’s up to the players to prove they are ready.
On Thursday (11 August), the club confirmed the forward has signed a new long term contract at Anfield.
When asked who could step in for Thiago while he recovers from injury, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think they are strong.

“Klopp likes to rotate. The likes of [James] Milner can do a job when called upon. He’s not going to play week in week out but Klopp can put that trust in him. There is people there.
“I would like to see Harvey Elliot come in. Last season I thought he was outstanding after his injury. He’s done well in pre-season so I think somebody like him could step up into that flair player role.“
