Harvey Elliott may struggle at Liverpool after ‘new signing’ reveal – pundit

Harvey Elliott may find it difficult to nail down a regular starting spot in the Liverpool starting XI due to the players ahead of him in the midfield and forward pecking order.

That is the view of ex-Aston Villa and England attacker Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on Elliott.

As quoted by the Athletic on Wednesday (20 July), Klopp claimed the 19-year-old was like a “new signing” and he was “really excited” by what 2022-23 could have in store for him.

After featuring in the first four Premier League games of the 2021-22 season, Elliott suffered a serious ankle injury against Leeds United after a Pascal Struijk challenge.

He only made a further seven appearances, including just one top-flight start, but he did score his first goal for the Reds in a win over Cardiff City in the FA Cup.

Asked whether the teenager can have an impact in 2022-23, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I hope he can.

“Sometimes it can be very difficult to get into that side. He’s not going to get in there before [Mohamed] Salah, [Luis] Diaz, [Diogo] Jota and [Darwin] Nunez.

“Then in midfield there’s Thiago, Fabinho, [Jordan] Henderson and [Naby] Keita so that will be difficult.

“If the manager’s got his trust then I’m sure he’ll want to give him a chance.”

Liverpool

Elliott moved to Liverpool from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has now played 20 times for the club across all competitions, scoring once and chipping in with two assists.

The England Under-21 international has four years left to run on his Anfield contract.
