Henderson told how he can oust David De Gea at Man United – pundit

Alan Hutton has insisted Dean Henderson must leave Man United to play regular football if Erik ten Hag decides David de Gea will remain his first choice.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested a loan move could be the best option for the 25-year-old – who has three years remaining on his Old Trafford deal.

As reported by the Northern Echo (29 May), Newcastle are set to table a £15million bid for Henderson and are confident of reaching a deal with Man United.

The one-time England international played just three times in the 2021-22 campaign and failed to appear in the Premier League.

Henderson has already been loaned out to Stockport, Grimsby, Shrewsbury, and Sheffield United during his time at Man United.

Hutton claimed the shot-stopper’s “long-term goal” will still be to break through at Man United despite the links to Newcastle.

“First and foremost, I think he’s a very good goalkeeper,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He was putting David de Gea under a lot of pressure at one time, but to be fair – De Gea has stood up to that pressure and remained number one.

“He’s got that security of being at a big club, but he has to be playing.

“Out of sight, out of mind. He has to be out there, on the pitch. He has to prove to everyone that he’s good enough to be the number one at Man United.

“That’s still his long-term goal. He’s young enough.

He needs to use these three years left on the contract to go and play in the Premier League.

“He’s got to play regularly if Ten Hag decides De Gea is the first choice.”
