‘He’s not John Stones’ – Agbonlahor savages £350,000-a-week Man United star
Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Man United to scrap a new contract for David de Gea and sign a new first-choice goalkeeper.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ripped into the 32-year-old for his “amateur” antics in the 3-0 defeat against Sevilla on Thursday (20 April).
De Gea played Harry Maguire into trouble for the Spanish side’s first goal in the Europa League quarter-final second leg, before gifting them a third with a sloppy touch as he came off his line.
Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (19 April) that Man United and the Spanish goalkeeper are optimistic about reaching an agreement over a new contract – with his current deal up in June.
It is believed that the Old Trafford club want him to take a pay cut on his reported £375,000 weekly wage.
De Gea leads the race for the Premier League Golden Glove with 14 clean sheets this term – but has been criticised by fans and pundits alike for several high-profile errors in the 2022-23 campaign.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I really think they should get a new goalkeeper.
“I look at De Gea and the money he is on – £375,000-a-week – and it’s clear he’s not good enough.
“Why is he giving the ball to Maguire there? You’re Man United, not Man City.
“Maguire isn’t John Stones. They’ve got to play to their strengths.
“And then the mistake for the third goal – what are you doing?
“He’s tried to control it with his studs, and it’s just amateur goalkeeping.
“If I’m Man United, I’m going out and getting another younger, reliable goalkeeper. I wouldn’t give De Gea a new deal.”
