Hibernian fans blast ‘truly awful’ Matt Doherty after Wolves announcement

Hibernian fans have been quick to remind Matt Doherty just how bad he was at the Scottish Premiership club after making his 500th club career appearance on Wednesday.

The Republic of Ireland international has been a mainstay at Molineux for years, with the right-back now on his second spell at the club.

As a result, it was no surprise that the majority of these 500 appearances came for Wolverhampton Wanderers at 388.

However, Hibs fans have not forgotten about his terrible 17-match loan spell in Scotland, and were quick to blast the 34-year-old, as Wolves plunge towards relegation.

Fans label Matt Doherty as ‘one of the worst footballers’ to play for Hibs

Early in his career, Doherty was loaned out to Hibs for the second half of the 2011-12 campaign.

However, this proved to be a disaster, with the full-back failing to impress during his time at Easter Road.

The defender also played a massive role in what is arguably the worst result in Hibs’ history when they lost 5-1 to Hearts in the Edinburgh derby in the Scottish Cup final.

As a result, when Wolves announced via X that Doherty had made his 500th career appearance, including Hibs in the graphic, fans were quick to remind the defender just how bad he was.

Could Doherty become Wolves’ all-time appearance maker?

Despite his terrible time at Hibs, Doherty has proven to be a wonderful servant for Wolves.

Across his two spells, he has helped to oversee two promotions, an FA Cup semi-final, and a European campaign.

As a result, he has now racked up a considerable number of appearances for the Old Gold side.

Currently, Derek Parkin holds the record for the most competitive appearances for Wolves at 609.

With Doherty only on 388, it makes it extremely unlikely that he will beat this.

However, he could easily become Wolves’ record appearance maker in the Premier League.

Currently, Ruben Neves holds this record at 177, with Doherty on 145, meaning that he is 22 games off matching this.

While it is impossible for the defender to achieve this in the current campaign, if Wolves bounce back to the Premier League immediately or pull off a great escape, Doherty could beat Neves’ record.
