‘Itching for an opportunity’ – Jason Holt issues warning to Rangers team-mates
Rangers midfielder Jason Holt has warned Ibrox team-mates Greg Docherty and Sean Goss they face a fight for their place at Ibrox as some of the stars who have been missing through injury return to fitness.
Docherty and Goss have left fans mesmerised with their recent performances in central midfield while Holt has had to make do with a place on the bench.
Graham Dorrans is likely to return to action before too long to add to the competition for a place and Holt has warned Goss and Docherty there are players “itching” to steal their spot in the starting XI.
“Greg, who has taken my place, has done really well so I just have to bide my time,” Holt said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“There are three of four central midfielders not playing at the moment and when they’re all fit they will be itching for an opportunity.
“You only get that if there is an injury or a suspension.
“When you look about, we’ve got Ryan Jack to come back — someone who’s got a Scotland cap and been about squads — and Graham Dorrans who’s played in the Premier League and got many Scotland caps.
“They bring quality so if you’ve got a jersey you’ve got to make sure you do your best.
“If not, once everyone is fit, there are guys ready to take it.”
The Gers have won their last five games ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final clash with Falkirk at Ibrox and Murty’s side look to have struck a good balance in central midfield with Docherty and Goss.
With Ryan Jack, Jordan Rossiter, Niko Kranjcar, Ross McCrorie, Holt and Dorrans all vying for the same two places, the Gers have a wealth of talent available in midfield.
Football Insider verdict:
Holt is completely right in what he says and Goss and Docherty face a real fight to hang on to their places. The pair have been in fantastic form in recent weeks and are rightly in possession of the jerseys but will need to stay at the very top of their game if they are to keep their place in the starting XI. After going through a host of midfield pairing so far this season, Docherty and Goss have been arguably the most impressive and deserve every plaudit coming their way. If they do keep the likes of Holt out of the team over the remainder of the season then Gers fans will likely have little reason to complain.
