‘Horrific’ Phillips development would force Leeds into January transfer market – Mills

Leeds United have enough depth in central midfield unless they suffer a “horrific” injury crisis, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender suggested Leeds may enter the January transfer market for a new midfielder if something happened to their current options.

The Yorkshire giants failed for the second successive summer to add a new centre-midfielder.

Football Insider reported on August 28 they had pulled the plug on their pursuit of Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien.

Earlier in the summer, Conor Gallagher snubbed Leeds to sign for Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea instead.

Asked whether Leeds should be worried about their midfield options, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think they will be ok.

“You’ve got Kalvin Phillips in that position, we know how good he is. You’ve got Stuart Dallas who can play that position as well when Junior Firpo comes back and is back at left-back. You’ve got Pascal Struijk who can play that position as well.

“You’ve got players in and around that who can fit in just in case something happens to Kalvin Phillips.

“I don’t think it’s a huge issue. There’s enough in there.

“If something horrific happens there’s nothing you can do about that anyhow. You just have to sort of accept that’s what it is. You can’t plan for every single eventually. Unless you’re Chelsea where you have two XIs of internationals.

“Sometimes you have to accept that you have injuries. You try and plan as best you can but you can’t plan for every eventually. If somebody picks up a season-ending injury, you can’t legislate for that.

“If something like that happens then maybe you have another look in January.”
