Howe backed to re-sign 'amazing' Ake after Newcastle source reveals new price tag - pundit

Manchester City defender Nathan Ake would be an “amazing signing” for Newcastle United, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 26-year-old would “tick all of the boxes” for the Magpies as they look to avoid relegation.

A Newcastle source told this site (November 11th) Howe has already set his sights on a triple transfer swoop in January with two centre-backs top of his wishlist.

Ake played under Howe at Bournemouth but left the Championship club to join City for a £40m fee in August 2020.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that City would accept a £10m loss on Newcastle target Ake in January to push through a deal.

Whelan insisted the centre-back is in his prime years and claimed a swoop for the 26-year-old is a “no brainer”.

“I think that signing ticks all the boxes for Newcastle,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Eddie Howe had him at Bournemouth, and was excellent for him there, that makes it a no-brainer. He progressed so well under him.

“He’s in his prime at 26, that is when you get the best football out of yourself.

“They need to bolster that defence, it’s been so leaky for almost three seasons now.

“They need to get him through the door at Newcastle as soon as possible if he is made available by Man City in January.

“He would be an amazing signing and the start of those jigsaw pieces coming together.”

Ake has played just 20 times for Man City.

The Chelsea academy graduate is capped 22 times by the Netherlands.
