‘Huge blow…maybe out for the season’ – Leeds Exclusive: Phillips delivers Augustin verdict

Kevin Phillips has claimed it will be a huge blow to Leeds United to lose Jean-Kevin Augustin to injury and suggested he could be ruled out for the rest of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Sunderland and insisted the 22-year-old will not be only player to be rule out with a muscle injury over the next month.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay claimed the French striker has suffered a recurrence of a hamstring strain which has kept him sidelined for most of his Leeds career.

Augustin arrived on loan from RB Leipzig in January and the postponement of the season appeared to have given him a second chance but he is now unlikely to be fit for the Whites first game back.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side travel to Cardiff City a week on Sunday as they look to put further distance between themselves and the chasing pack.

When asked by Football Insider how damaging the news could be to Leeds’ promotion bid, Phillips said: “It is a huge blow, again.

“We have not seen him, only glimpses. Everyone was excited about him being full fit and performing.

“It won’t be just him though, a few players will break down with muscle injuries but it is a concern.

“If it is a bad one, it could maybe put him out for the rest of the season. That would be a hammer blow for Leeds but they have dealt without him up until now.”

Augustin has made just three appearances since he arrived in January, all as a substitute.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are third-placed Fulham with nine games to play – seven wins would guarantee their promotion.
