Newcastle fans deliver ringing endorsement of Leeds supporters in poll
By Harry Sykes
Leeds’ away fans have been voted the best in the Championship this season in a Twitter poll conducted by their rivals Newcastle United, it was announced on Tuesday.
Newcastle Fans TV, an account that creates daily videos and podcasts about the north-east giants, surveyed its 23,000 followers for their views on a number of club, team and player issues for the season just finished.
The Toon faithful were quizzed on the best supported away side at St James’ Park and the winners were Leeds supporters.
The vote for the Yorkshire giants was announced by Newcastle Fans TV on Monday night.
It is a ringing endorsement for Leeds, who are renowned as one of the biggest clubs in England despite spending the last 13 years outside of the Premier League.
The Championship big hitters took huge away followings to most of their matches away from Elland Road and made their voices heard when the division big hitters drew 1-1 at St James’ Park last month.
Garry Monk’s side mounted a genuine promotion challenge but a final-month collapse meant they finished the season in seventh, one place and five points outside of the play-offs.
By contrast, Newcastle bounced back from relegation to secure promotion back to the top flight at the first opportunity, also finishing as Championship winners.
In other Newcastle United news, the club have hijacked Everton’s move for a coveted 23-year-old, with a £75,000-a-week contract to be offered.
